Reading time: 2 minThursday 24 April 2020, Great Britain – It was published in the prestigious magazine Nutrients the latest article of Philip C. Calder Professor at theUniversity of Southampton and NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Center researcher entitled “Optimal Nutritional Status for a Well-Functioning Immune System Is an Important Factor to Protect against Viral Infections”.
In this article Prof. Calder and his colleagues consider theimportance of nutritional status and micronutrient levels, for the maintenance of a good physical function and therefore also of a good immune function, a basic factor in any approach aimed at disease prevention.

After having extensively analyzed the various implications, the work of Prof. Calder and his team presents the following conclusions:

    • Supplementation with micronutrients (multivitamin formulations, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc) and omega-3 fatty acids is a safe, effective, and low-cost strategy to support optimal immune function
    • Supplementation that exceeds the RDA recommended levels by reaching the upper intake limits is justified for specific nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin D.

Public health officials are encouraged to include such nutritional strategies in their recommendations for improving public health.

In practice, a supplementation that includes vitamins and minerals is suggested.

    In practice it is suggested:

    • Multivitamin multimineral that supports 100% of the requirement of these micronutrients including: Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, folic acid and minerals such as zinc, iron, selenium, magnesium and copper, in addition to a well-balanced diet
    • Vitamin C: intake of 200 mg/day in healthy subjects and doses between 1000 and 2000 mg/day in sick subjects (depending on the situation with monitoring by the doctor)
    • Vitamin D: 2000 IU/day equal to 50 mcg/day
    • Zinc: between 8-11 mg/day
    • Omega 3 (EPA+DHA): 250 mg/day of EPA+DHA.
