Multivitamins: why take them? Let's discover together the benefits they can bring.
What factors should we really consider to understand if it is necessary to take multivitamins?
These are different factors, correlated with the lifestyle habits of each individual. So, what questions should we ask ourselves before deciding if this solution is right for us?
1) Do we consume enough fresh, raw, seasonal fruit and vegetables?
It is now well known and superfluous to insist on why we must consume vegetables and fruit, as they are among the main sources of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
Why prefer them fresh and raw?
Fresh since a plant separated from the root system or a fruit separated from the plant is no longer able to feed itself and is therefore forced to consume its own internal resources: from this it is possible to understand how the longer the time since the plant was harvested the lower the vitamin content that it can provide.
Raw, as several vitamin-like substances are thermolabile, and therefore degradable by the heat provided by cooking, and photolabile, and therefore degradable by the light radiation characteristic of sunlight.
Therefore, both cooking times and preparations that involve cutting and peeling the product lead to a further loss of these substances.
Therefore, in the absence of the possibility of consuming plant sources with these characteristics or in these ways, the multivitamin it proves to be a good functional completion solution.

2) When taking multivitamin supplements, is the amount adequate for physical activity levels?
This consideration is also essential, since the content of various vitamin substances is strictly correlated to the physical activity level as they are physiologically used as antioxidants (such as vitamins C, A, E, etc.) or in biochemical processes related to metabolic functions (such as vitamins of the B group).
So the higher the level of physical activity the greater the production of oxygen radical species and consequently the greater the need for vitamin species with antioxidant action.
The same goes for metabolic cofactors; in fact, the greater the body's metabolic demand, the greater the requirement for, for example, B vitamins.
The quantity of micronutrients must therefore be balanced based on activity level of the end user, completing what has been done with the power supply with integration if necessary.
3) Is my intake level adequate for my physiological condition?
In what sense? Before answering this question, we must start from the assumption that every physiological condition related to different stages of life shows its specific characteristics.
For example, analyzing a subject in thedevelopmental age it will be possible to isolate aspects such as rapidly changing body mass and the notable level of basal metabolism due to rapid growth dynamics.
If instead we wanted to consider the metabolic characteristics of a subject in old age It would be possible to see how there are different aspects, related to the need to compensate for the reduced efficiency of an organism that gradually tends to reduce its response capacity.

In addition to age also sex constitutes an important discriminant, in fact on the basis of the specific metabolic mechanisms related to the male and female sex both the vitamin and mineral intake must be carefully personalized, especially in fertile period for the female sex, where tissue turnover involves an important both metabolic and synthetic commitment (tissue and haematopoietic).
Even in this case, therefore, supplementation can prove to be an adequate tool for completing a common diet.
In conclusion, from the analysis of these essential aspects, it is possible to understand how for some subjects, in certain periods of the year and/or in certain phases of life, theusing a multivitamin It appears to be particularly interesting, obviously considering adequately the factors just illustrated among which we recall the essential ones:
- Food options
- Age
- Sex
- Physical activity level
By evaluating these aspects it will be possible select the most suitable product for each specific need. This also makes it clear that multivitamins do not exist but there are multivitamins, appropriately designed based on the characteristics of each macro category.
Therefore, when choosing a product, evaluating this approach (by the manufacturer) constitutes a first aspect that allows us to discriminate between product lines with a more rational approach, within which it will be possible to identify the product best suited to our specific needs.
And so also for the integration with multivitamins we can say: to each his own!
