Vitamin D is essential for calcium homeostasis, and is crucial for the growth and maintenance of the skeleton. The metabolically active form is cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), which acts by promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphate in the intestine, the deposition of calcium in the bones and the maintenance of cartilage trophism. Cholecalciferol stimulates the synthesis of CaBP (calcium-carrying protein) in enterocytes. Physiological levels of Vitamin D prove to be useful in controlling inflammatory phenomena.
